Projects

Its amazing how you can be putting along in a project metaphorially on back roads then someone all of a sudden throws you onto a highway onramp and expects you to go 70 from about 25 all in the space of one meeting.

Starting to get interesting...

And replying to my previous post, yes there are masters racing leagues for people out of college and just wanting to race for fun. And screw my old racing suit, I just ordered a new one anyway.

Athleticism and lazyness

I think I need an athletic goal to train for. Without it I find myself not going to the gym or when I go to the gym its just a short workout, I don't have any goals in place besides "don't get fat" and, well, that's just not a good goal.

How about ski racing? Are there adult racing leagues that I can participate in on the weekends? That would be way fun, I wonder if my old racing suit still fits (probably not).

The quest for a Wii

Begin Quest for Wii,
Required Items: 1 Wii, 1 Extra controller, Rented game from Blockbuster

Difficulty: Varied, travel quest

I decided this weekend to buy a Wii. I've been wanting one for a while and since Katie is here this weekend I decided that it was finally time to get one. I like the new motion sensing aspect to the games and believe that it will be much more fun the traditional thumb games.

Start Time 11am. I Decide to get Wii, thinking that its 4 months past christmas and that whole shortage thing should be over by now. I look online for a guage of prices available and possible locations where a Wii could be had. Toys R Us are apparently having a big thing where Wii's are $250 this weekend. I call Toys R Us, and they inform me that they sold out of their Wii's immediatly and there had been a line at the store since about 8am. All three of the Toys R Us's in Atlanta tell the same story. Well Ok, obviously I'm not going to get one at $250. Ebay has a pretty liquid Wii's market and they sell there for around $320. Ok so given the standard Ebay markdown I now expect to pay about $350 for a Wii at say Bestbuy or some other consumer electronics store.

11:30, Keys in hand, girl on arm, we set off to the Best Buys, Targets, and EBGames around town. Strike one, Strike two, Strike three, etc. Return Edgewood shopping center with a new pair of shoes for the girl (I know how to keep girls happy while geek shopping), a quick stop at Bed Bath and Beyond gets a new pasta pan. We get home at 1:30 ish. Discouraged and a little miffed I start some soup and get a crazy thought, "what about craigs list?"

Craigs list reveals a couple second hand Wii sellers around $350, one of whom is on the Georgia Tech Campus. I send an email with my phone number, and stating that I'm willing to buy today if he has it for sale. Email sent I go back to cooking my soup and about 5 minutes later my phone rings, and yea its the Wii seller. He has the Wii in the GaTech library and is willing to sell it to us right now.

To be continued.

Atlanta to Charlottesville, VA, to Amherst, MA
That splits the drive into two 9 hour legs.

I'm still trying to decide which day to move. Graduation is the weekend. Moving will be sometime during the following week. My instinct says Wednesday. That gives me monday and tuesday to chill, clean, pack my car, and prepare for the movers. The movers should be finished within the same day as their arrival, so I should be out of there by 5pm. A 9 hour trip will put me in Charlottesville by 2am ish, and then in Amherst by Thursday night.

Only two things I'm going to miss about Atlanta

There are only two things I'm going to miss about Atlanta. First I'm really going to miss the corner Publix. That store is great, they serve sample cooked meals every lunch and dinner (free), they are close by, and pretty cheap. Second I'm going to miss the ease and availability of parking. I know boston is going to be worse for parking, there isn't anything I want to do about that, but its just something I'm going to notice.

Warcraft

I now see why everyone seems to like playing World of Warcraft. Its a very well designed MMORPG, much better then anarchy. And LO I've found out how to make cash at low levels, its amazing. That was always a frustration in Anarchy, it was easy to make money at high levels but at low levels, money was extremely scarce and it was more like work then play to do anything. Anyway, I'm hooked.

Oh yea, and currently my Rogue is at about level 12 in Bleeding Hollow a PvP realm.

Lying flirting and fighting

Most of the time I think the MSN romance pages are total crap, but I ran into this one today and I actually think its pretty good.

http://lifestyle.msn.com/Relationships/LoveandRomance/Articlerb.aspx?cp-documentid=1334815&wa=wsignin1.0>1=8881

"First of all, the ego boost you get from flirting with someone new can make you feel as sexy as you did when you and your guy first got together. "Over time, couples get so used to each other, they become complacent," says Yvonne Thomas, Ph.D., a psychologist in Los Angeles. "Flirting with other people brings out the 'Wow!' factor again. It reignites your sexiness and boosts your confidence." The key is that you share the benefits: "You can take that sexy energy home to your husband and use it in the bedroom," says Thomas. "

"So instead of waiting for him to give you what you need every time, get a little grabby now and then. "Doing some taking as well as giving," says Page, "is a way for you to keep your relationship perfectly balanced." No, we're not talking about blowing the kids' college funds on a trip to Vegas. We're talking about small gestures that make a big difference to you. If he's stuck at the office when you want to go to your friend's birthday dinner, don't wait for him - just go. If you haven't been getting to watch your own shows lately, TiVo his and tell him he's going to have to wait an hour tonight. If he still hasn't fixed the sink, just hire a plumber already. Don't feel guilty about choosing to put yourself first at moments like these. Taking things for yourself will make you feel satisfied with what you've got, instead of leaving you brewing and stewing over what you're not getting from him. And that'll make you a happier, more loving partner in the long run."

And there is a very good paragraph or three on arguing which is hard to quote here but bears reading.

Excuses

What is it with excuses, fuck they annoy me so much.

For this security lab you need a laptop to do almost anything. One of my team members, the only one that seems interested at all in helping me:
"My laptop power cord broke, I'll come to the lab, but I don't have a working laptop... what should I do???"

You are in a univeristy. Either a) get a new power cord, b) borrow someone elses power cord for a little while, or c) borrow a laptop.

Don't fucking tell me that you can't do anything because your laptops power cord broke. Your a grad student now, and I'm not your fucking mother.

Why are we teaching abstinence only?

Results from a new study that used national survey data for 1995 and 2002 show that in all 15–19 year-olds, improvements in contraceptive method use accounts for 86% of the fall in pregnancy rates between 1995 and 2002, whereas a decrease in the percentage of teens who were sexually active accounts for 14% of the pregnancy rate decline. All of this contribution occurs in young adolescents ages 15–17 years.

Deloitte

Email today from Deloitte:

"I wanted to let you know that offer finalization is taking a bit longer than expected, but I hope to be able to get back in touch with you later this week or early next week at the latest."

GAH the suspense is killing me. I mean I'm pretty confident in getting the offer, but I still want to know for sure.

BF2

This just scares me

http://www.bf2stats.com/e107_plugins/bf2stats_menu/bf2stats.php?name=67382006

Check out when he started: March 2006
Look at the hours playing time: 2133
Math: 7 months, 2100 hours = 300 hours a month, about 10 hours a day average! Wow

Katie's remark: "I wonder when the last time he got laid was." Seriously, that's just fucked up. What's my average? I started in april and have played about 75 hours, so thats about 12 hours a month, a paltry 3 ish hours a week. VERY reasonable.

googling

Its amazing what you can find when you google yourself. This was a new hit I found I hadn't seen before.

And its always amazing the old legacys that don't go away, there are a few things on there from 1995 that I'm a little embarrased about but just won't go away.
